His saying: "Follow it."

8123 - And by the same chain, from Qatadah, regarding His saying: "Follow it," he says: "Follow its lawful matters."

His saying: "And fear (Allah) that you may receive mercy."

8124 - Musa ibn Harun al-Tusi informed us, in what he wrote to me, he said: Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad al-Marwazi told us, Shayban told us, from Qatadah, regarding His saying: "And fear (Allah)," he says: "Fear that which He has forbidden, and it is this Quran."

His saying, the Exalted: "Lest you should say."

8125 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah told us, Shababah told us, Warqa’ told us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "Lest you should say: 'The Scripture was only revealed to two sects before us,' the Jews and the Christians." He feared that the Quraysh might say it.

His saying, the Exalted: "The Scripture was only revealed to two sects before us."

8126 - My father told us, Abu Salih told us, Mu‘awiyah ibn Salih told me, from ‘Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn ‘Abbas, regarding His saying: "Lest you should say: 'The Scripture was only revealed to two sects before us,'" and they are the Jews and the Christians.

His saying: "And indeed we were of their study, unaware."

8127 - And by the same chain, from Ibn ‘Abbas, regarding His saying: "And indeed we were of their study, unaware," he says: "We were unaware of its recitation." It was narrated from al-Suddi something similar.

8128 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us, in what he wrote to me, Asbagh ibn al-Faraj told us, ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam told us, regarding His saying: "And indeed we were of their study, unaware," he said: "Study (dirasah) is reading and knowledge." And he recited: "And they studied (darasu) what is in it," he said: "They knew what is in it; they did not approach it out of ignorance." And he recited: "And so that they may say, 'You have studied (darasta)," meaning: "You have known."

His saying: "Unaware."

8129 - Ahmad ibn ‘Uthman ibn Hakim al-Awdi informed us, in what he wrote to me, Ahmad ibn Mufaddal told us, Asbat told us, from al-Suddi, regarding His saying: "And indeed we were of their study, unaware," he said: "We were unaware of their reading, we did not know what it was."
