steadfast, they will overcome two hundred, and if there are among you a thousand, they will overcome two thousand.”

A similar report was narrated from ‘Ata’, Mujahid, ‘Ikrimah, al-Hasan, Zayd ibn Aslam, ‘Ata’ al-Khurasani, and al-Dahhak.

9141 - Ahmad ibn ‘Isam al-Ansari narrated to us, Wahb ibn Jarir ibn Hazim narrated to us, from his father, from al-Zubayr ibn al-Khirrit, from ‘Ikrimah, from Ibn ‘Abbas, who said: Ibn ‘Abbas said: They were reduced in victory to the extent that [the burden of] the number [of soldiers] was lightened for them.

His saying, the Almighty: “They will overcome two hundred”

9142 - Abu Zur’ah narrated to us, Yahya ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Bukayr narrated to us, ‘Abd Allah ibn Lahi’ah narrated to us, ‘Ata’ ibn Dinar narrated to us, from Sa’id ibn Jubayr regarding: “If there are among you twenty steadfast, they will overcome two hundred,” meaning: They will kill two hundred of the polytheists.

His saying, the Almighty: “And if there are among you one hundred, they will overcome a thousand of those who disbelieve”

9143 - And by the same chain from Sa’id ibn Jubayr: “And if there are among you one hundred, they will overcome a thousand of those who disbelieve.” On the day of Badr, Allah imposed upon the Muslims that one man among them should fight ten of the polytheists in order to cut off the roots of the disbelievers. When Allah defeated the polytheists and cut off their roots, He lightened the burden upon the Muslims after that, and there was revealed: “Now, Allah has lightened [the burden] for you” — meaning: after the battle of Badr — “and He knows that among you is weakness. So if there are from you one hundred steadfast, they will overcome,” meaning: they will fight, “two hundred of the polytheists.”

His saying, the Almighty: “Because they are a people who do not understand”

9144 - Muhammad ibn al-‘Abbas narrated to us, Abu Ghassan Muhammad ibn ‘Amr narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, Yahya ibn ‘Abbad ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr narrated to us, from his father: “Because they are a people who do not understand,” they do not fight based on intention, nor for truth, nor with any knowledge of what is good or evil.

His saying, the Almighty: “Now, Allah has lightened [the burden] for you, and He knows that among you is weakness”

9145 - Abu Zur’ah narrated to us, Yahya ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Bukayr narrated to us, ‘Abd Allah ibn Lahi’ah narrated to us, ‘Ata’ ibn Dinar narrated to us, from Sa’id ibn Jubayr: When Allah defeated the polytheists and cut off their roots, He lightened the burden upon the Muslims after that, and there was revealed: “Now, Allah has lightened [the burden] for you” — meaning: after the battle of Badr.
