The third aspect:

8494 - My father told us, Muhammad ibn al-Wazir al-Dimashqi told us, al-Walid told us, Ibn Lahi'ah told us, from Yazid ibn al-Hannad, that Ka'b said: The A'raf in the Book of Allah is a deep, low-lying area. Ibn Lahi'ah said: A deep valley behind which is an elevated mountain.

8495 - My father told us, Mahmud ibn Khalid and Muhammad ibn al-Wazir told us, they both said: al-Walid told us, Sa'id ibn Bashir told us, from Ibn Bishr, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, who said: The A'raf are mountains between Paradise and the Fire; they are upon their heights, upon their crests. And it was narrated from al-Suddi, in some of his narrations, that he said: The A'raf is a wall between Paradise and the Fire.

The fourth aspect:

8496 - Husayn ibn al-Hasan told us, Ibrahim ibn 'Abd Allah al-Harawi told us, Hajjaj told us, from Ibn Jurayj, who said: They claimed that it is the Sirat (Bridge).

8497 - Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim al-Awdi informed us in what he wrote to me, Ahmad ibn Mufaddal told us, Asbat told us, from al-Suddi, regarding His saying: "On the A'raf will be men"—he said: It was only called the A'raf because its people recognize the people.

His saying, the Almighty: "Men"

8498 - Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Harawi told us, Yazid ibn Harun told us, Abu Ma'shar informed us, Yahya ibn Shibl told us, from Ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Muzani, meaning 'Umar, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was asked about the companions of the A'raf. He said: They are a people who were killed in the path of Allah in disobedience to their fathers; thus, Allah prevented them from Paradise due to their fathers' disobedience, and their being killed in the path of Allah prevented them from the Fire.

الأَعْرَافُ سُورٌ بَيْنَ الْجَنَّةِ وَالنَّارِ.

٨٤٩٦ - حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْهَرَوِيُّ، ثنا حَجَّاجٌ عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ: وَزَعَمُوا أَنَّهُ الصِّرَاطُ

٨٤٩٧ - أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ حَكِيمٍ الأَوْدِيُّ فِيمَا كَتَبَ إِلَيَّ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُفَضَّلٍ، ثنا أَسْبَاطٌ، عَنِ السُّدِّيِّ: قَوْلُهُ: عَلَى الأَعْرَافِ رِجَالٌ قَالَ: وَإِنَّمَا سُمِّيَ الأَعْرَافَ لأَنَّ أَصْحَابَهُ يَعْرِفُونَ النَّاسَ.

٨٤٩٨ - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْهَرَوِيُّ، ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مَعْشَرٍ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ شِبْلٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْمُزَنِيِّ يَعْنِي: عُمَرَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ: سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ أَصْحَابِ الأَعْرَافِ قَالَ: هُمْ قَوْمٌ قُتِلُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فِي مَعْصِيَةِ آبَائِهِمْ فَمَنَعَهُمُ اللَّهُ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ بِمَعْصِيَةِ آبَائِهِمْ، وَمَنَعَهُمُ النَّارَ قَتْلُهُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ.
