the morning came, he brought it to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. A man from the hypocrites said: 'Indeed, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf is showing off immensely,' and another said: 'Allah is surely rich beyond need of this man's sa'.' Then Allah the Exalted revealed: 'Those who criticize the voluntary givers from among the believers in their charities' — [referring to] 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf — 'and those who find nothing to give but their effort' — [referring to] the owner of the sa' — 'so they mock them; Allah will mock them, and for them is a painful punishment.'

10508 - My father narrated to us, [who said] Abu Salamah and Musaddad narrated to us, both saying: Abu 'Awanah narrated to us, [who said] 'Umar ibn Abi Salamah narrated to us from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: 'Give charity, for I intend to send out an expedition.' 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have four thousand: two thousand I lend to my Lord, and two thousand are for my family.' The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to him: 'May Allah bless what you have given, and bless what you have kept.' A man from the Ansar said: 'I spent the night hauling ropes and earned two sa' of dates; one sa' I lend to my Lord, and one sa' is for my family.' The hypocrites criticized him, saying: 'By Allah, Ibn 'Awf did not give this except out of showing off,' and they said: 'Were Allah and His Messenger not rich beyond need of this one's sa'?' Then Allah the Exalted revealed: 'Those who criticize the voluntary givers from among the believers in their charities and those who find nothing to give but their effort.'

10509 - Muhammad ibn 'Ammar narrated to us, [who said] 'Abd al-Rahman al-Dashtaki narrated to us, [who said] Abu Ja'far al-Razi informed us, from al-Rabi' regarding His saying: 'Those who criticize the voluntary givers from among the believers in their charities': The people were afflicted with severe hardship, so the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, commanded them to give charity, saying: 'O people, give charity.' People began to give charity, and 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf came with four hundred uqiyyah of gold. He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I had eight hundred uqiyyah of gold, and I have brought four hundred uqiyyah.' The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: 'O Allah, bless him in what he gave, and bless him in what he kept.'

10500 - (*) Abu 'Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Hammad al-Tehrani narrated to us, [who said] Hafs ibn 'Umar informed us, [who said] al-Hakam ibn Aban narrated to us, from 'Ikrimah, who said: When it was the day of Fitr, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf brought out a large amount of wealth, 'Asim ibn 'Adi likewise brought out [wealth], and a man brought out two sa', and another brought out one sa'. So a speaker said
