so enter it, and as a bounty from Me upon you, I will deliver you from the Fire. He said: He enters Paradise, he and those with him. He said: Then a servant is brought from the second class. He says: My servant, why did you act? He says: O Lord, You created a Fire and created its shackles, its scorching heat, its hot wind, its black smoke, and what You prepared for the people of Your punishment therein and the people of Your disobedience, so I kept my nights awake and my days weary out of fear of it. He says: My servant, you only acted out of fear of the Fire, so I deliver you from the Fire, and as a bounty from Me upon you, I have admitted you into My Paradise. He enters Paradise, he and those with him. Then a man is brought from the third class, and He says: My servant, why did you act? He says: My Lord, out of love for You and longing for You, by Your Might, I have kept my nights awake and my days thirsty out of longing for You and love for You. The Blessed and Exalted says: My servant, you only acted out of love for Me and longing for Me. The Lord then reveals Himself to him and says: Here I am, look at Me! Then He says: It is from My bounty upon you that I deliver you from the Fire, admit you into My Paradise, let you visit My angels, and greet you Myself. He then enters Paradise, he and those with him.

Qatadah said: "And it was mentioned to us that Abu al-Darda' used to say: 'O how many a person gives thanks for his blessings while others do not, and they do not add to his [reward]; and O how many a bearer of jurisprudence is not a jurist.'"

His saying, the Exalted: "And, [O Muhammad], you are not [engaged] in any affair or recite any of the Qur'an and you [people] do not do any deed except that We are witness over you when you are involved in it."

10447 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn told us, Ishaq ibn Ibrahim told us, 'Abd Allah ibn Ibrahim al-San'ani told us, from his father, who said: "Some of the scholars, when he went out from his house, would write on his hand: 'And, [O Muhammad], you are not [engaged] in any affair or recite any of the Qur'an and you [people] do not do any deed except that We are witness over you when you are involved in it' [up to the end of] the verse."

His saying, the Exalted: "When you are involved in it."

10448 - My father told us, Abu Salih told us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih told us, from 'Ali ibn Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding his saying: "When you are involved in it," he says: "When you are doing it."
