10596 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj told us, Ahmad ibn al-Ashqar told us, from Qays ibn al-Rabi', from Hajjaj, from 'Umayr ibn Sa'id, from 'Ali, who said: "Repentance was accepted from the people of Yunus on the day of 'Ashura."
10597 - My father 'Abd Allah ibn Raja' told us, Israel reported from Abu Ishaq, from 'Amr ibn Maymun, 'Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud told us: "Yunus the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) promised his people the punishment and informed them that it would come to them within three days. So they separated every mother from her child, then they went out and turned to Allah and sought His forgiveness, so Allah removed the punishment from them."
10598 - Abu Zur'ah told us, Safwan ibn Salih told us, al-Walid told us, Khulayd told us, from Qatadah regarding the saying of Allah: "Why was there not a town that believed and its belief benefited it, except the people of Yunus? When they believed, We removed from them..."—he said: "There was no town among the nations before the people of Yunus that disbelieved and then believed when they witnessed the punishment, except the people of Yunus, so Allah excepted the people of Yunus."
10599 - And it was mentioned to us that the people of Yunus were in some land of Mosul. When they missed their Prophet, Allah cast into their hearts (penitence), so they wore sackcloth and brought out their cattle, separating every animal from its offspring, and they cried out to Allah for forty mornings. When Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, knew the sincerity in their hearts, their repentance, and their remorse for what had passed from them, He removed the punishment from them after it had hung over them; there was nothing between them and the punishment but a mile.
10600 - al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid ibn Mazid al-Bayruti informed us by way of recitation, Muhammad ibn Sa'id ibn Shabur told us, 'Uthman ibn 'Ata' informed me, from his father, regarding the saying of Allah: "Why was there not a town that believed and its belief benefited it"—"when the wrath of Allah descended upon it; and We did not do that to any town except the town of Yunus."
His saying, the Almighty: "We removed from them the punishment of disgrace in the life of the world."
10601 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn told us, Muhammad ibn 'Isa told us, Salamah told us, from Ibn Ishaq, from Yazid ibn Ziyad al-Hashimi, from 'Abd Allah ibn Abi Salamah, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: "Allah sent him to the people of a town. They rejected what he came to them with and refrained from accepting it. When they did that, Allah inspired him: 'I am sending the punishment upon them on such and such a day, so leave from among them.' ١٠٥٩٦ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الأَشَجُّ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الأَشْقَرِ عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ الرَّبِيعِ عَنْ حَجَّاجٍ عَنْ عُمَيْرِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ: تِيبَ عَلَى قَوْمِ يُونُسَ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ.
١٠٥٩٧ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ رَجَاءٍ، أَنْبَأَ إِسْرَائِيلُ عَنْ أبي إسحاق عن عمرو ابن مَيْمُونٍ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ أَنَّ يُونُسَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَعَدَ قَوْمَهُ الْعَذَابَ وَأَخْبَرَ أَنَّهُ يَأْتِيهِمْ إِلَى ثَلاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ فَفَرَّقُوا بَيْنَ كُلِّ وَالِدَةٍ وَوَلَدِهَا ثُمَّ خَرَجُوا وَصَارُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ وَاسْتَغْفَرُوا فَكَشَفَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمُ الْعَذَابَ.
١٠٥٩٨ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ، ثنا صَفْوَانُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، ثنا الْوَلِيدُ، ثنا خُلَيْدٌ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ: فَلَوْلا كَانَتْ قَرْيَةٌ آمَنَتْ فَنَفَعَهَا إِيمَانُهَا إِلا قَوْمَ يُونُسَ لَمَّا آمَنُوا كَشَفْنَا عَنْهُمْ قَالَ: لَمْ تَكُنْ قَرْيَةٌ آمَنَتْ مِنَ الأُمَمِ قَبْلَ قَوْمِ يُونُسَ كَفَرَتْ ثُمَّ آمَنَتْ حِينَ عَايَنَتِ الْعَذَابَ إِلا قَوْمَ يُونُسَ فَاسْتَثْنَى اللَّهُ قَوْمَ يُونُسَ.
١٠٥٩٩ - وَذُكِرَ لَنَا أَنَّ قَوْمَ يُونُسَ كَانُوا بِبَعْضِ أَرْضِ الْمَوْصِلِ، فَلَمَّا فَقَدُوا نَبِيَّهُمْ قَذَفَ اللَّهُ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ، فَلَبِسُوا الْمُسُوحَ وَأَخْرَجُوا الْمَوَاشِيَ مِنْ كُلِّ بَهِيمَةٍ وَوَلَدَهَا فَعَجُّوا إِلَى اللَّهِ أَرْبَعِينَ صَبَاحًا فَلَمَّا عَرَفَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ مِنْهُمُ الصِّدْقَ بِقُلُوبِهِمْ وَالتَّوْبَةَ وَالنَّدَامَةَ عَلَى مَا مَضَى مِنْهُمْ كَشَفَ عَنْهُمُ الْعَذَابَ بَعْدَ أَنْ تَدَلَّى عَلَيْهِمْ، لَمْ يَكُنْ بَيْنَهُمْ وَبَيْنَ الْعَذَابِ إِلا مِيلٌ.
١٠٦٠٠ - أَخْبَرَنَا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ مَزْيَدٍ الْبَيْرُوتِيُّ قِرَأَةً، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ شَابُورَ أَخْبَرَنِي عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَطَاءٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ: فَلَوْلا كَانَتْ قَرْيَةٌ آمَنَتْ فَنَفَعَهَا إِيمَانُهَا إذا نَزَلَ بِهَا بَأْسُ اللَّهِ وَلَمْ نَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ بِقَرْيَةٍ إِلا قَرْيَةَ يُونُسَ.

١٠٦٠١ - حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِيسَى، ثنا سَلَمَةُ، عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ زِيَادٍ الْهَاشِمِيُّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ بَعَثَهُ اللَّهُ إِلَى أَهْلِ قَرْيَةٍ فَرَدُّوا عَلَيْهِ مَا جَاءَهُمْ بِهِ فَامْتَنَعُوا مِنْهُ فَلَمَّا فَعَلُوا ذَلِكَ أَوْصَى اللَّهُ إِلَيْهِ إِنِّي مُرْسِلٌ عَلَيْهِمُ الْعَذَابَ فِي يَوْمَ كَذَا، فَاخْرُجْ مِنْ بَيْنَ أَظْهُرِهِمْ فَأَعْلَمَ قَوْمَهُ الَّذِي وَعَدَهُ اللَّهُ مِنْ عَذَابِهِ إِيَّاهُمْ فَقَالُوا: ارْمُقُوهُ فَإِنْ هُوَ خَرَجَ مِنْ بَيْنِ أَظْهُرِكُمْ فَهُوَ وَاللَّهِ كأين مَا وَعَدَكُمْ، فَلَمَّا كَانَتِ اللَّيْلَةُ الَّتِي وُعِدُوا العذاب في
