the disbelievers. It means by this: the disbelievers of the Arabs, and the People of the Scripture, whoever among them fought the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and disbelieved in his signs.

His saying, Exalted is He: "It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth"

10069 - Musa ibn Harun al-Tusi informed us—in what he wrote to me—al-Husayn ibn Muhammad al-Marwudhi narrated to us, Shayban narrated to us from Qatadah regarding 'It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth', he said: May Allah fight a people who profess a religion that no nation has ever verified, nor has it prospered, nor has it been supported; whenever they manifest it, their blood is shed because of it, and when they remain silent about it, that is a joy in their hearts. That, by Allah, is a false religion. They have been clinging to this affair for some sixty-odd years; so have they ever prospered in it one day, or succeeded?

His saying, Exalted is He: "To manifest it over all religion"

[The first interpretation]

10070 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah from Ibn 'Abbas regarding his saying: 'To manifest it over all religion', he said: 'Allah manifests His Prophet over the affair of the entire religion, so He grants it all to him, and nothing of it is hidden from him.'

[The second interpretation]

10071 - Muhammad ibn 'Amir ibn Ibrahim mentioned to us, my father narrated to us from al-Nu'man ibn 'Abd al-Salam from Sufyan and others from Khalid al-Hadhdha' from 'Ikrimah from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: 'Allah sent Muhammad to manifest it over all religion; so our religion is above all creeds, and our men are above their women, and their men shall not be above our women.'

[The third interpretation]

10072 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, al-Muqaddami narrated to us, Ma'mar narrated to us from Layth from Mujahid regarding 'To manifest it over all religion', he said: 'That will not occur until no Jew, nor Christian, nor follower of any sect remains, except Islam; and until the sheep feels safe from the wolf, the cow from the lion, and the human from the snake; and until a mouse does not gnaw a grain bag; and until the Jizyah is imposed, the cross is broken, and the swine is killed. That is His saying: "To manifest it over all religion."

It was narrated from al-Dahhak that he said: Islam shall prevail over all religion.'
