10096 - My father narrated to us, Ibn ‘Umar narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "And among you are listeners to them"—he said: They are spies for the hypocrites; ‘Abd Allah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul, Rifa’ah ibn Tabut, and Aws ibn Qayzi are not hypocrites themselves, but they are spies for the hypocrites. Sufyan said: I think Humayd ibn Qays mentioned this from Mujahid.
10097 - My father narrated to us, al-Qasim ibn Dinar narrated to us, Ishaq ibn Mansur narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Aban, from Zayd ibn Aslam regarding "And among you are listeners to them"—he said: They are those who report [news].
10098 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us in what he wrote to me, Asbagh narrated to us, he said: I heard ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam regarding His saying: "And among you are listeners to them"—they listen to what you bring to your enemy.
His saying, the Exalted: "And they plotted the affairs for you until the truth came."
10099 - ‘Abd Allah ibn Sulayman narrated to us, al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali narrated to us, ‘Amir ibn al-Furat narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding His saying: "They had already sought [to cause] tribulation before and had plotted the affairs for you, [until] the truth came and the command of Allah appeared, while they were averse." As for "They plotted the affairs for you," they turned them upside down: [asking] how they should act!
His saying, the Exalted: "And among them is he who says, 'Permit me and do not put me to trial.'"
9600 - (*) My father narrated to us, Duhaym ibn Ibrahim al-Dimashqi narrated to us, ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Bashir narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, Sa‘id ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Hassan ibn Thabit narrated to us, from Jabir ibn ‘Abd Allah, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—saying to Jadd ibn Qays: "O Jadd, would you like [to participate in] fighting the Banu al-Asfar (the Byzantines)?" Jadd said: "O Messenger of Allah, will you permit me? For I am a man who loves women, and I fear that if I see the women of the Banu al-Asfar, I will be tempted (fitnah)." The Messenger of Allah—while turning away from him—said: "I have permitted you." At that point, Allah revealed: "And among them is he who says, 'Permit me and do not put me to trial.' Surely into trial they have fallen."
9601 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu‘awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us, from ‘Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying: "And among them is he who says, 'Permit me and do not put me to trial'"—he says: Permit me and do not place me in difficulty.
9602 - Al-‘Abbas ibn al-Walid informed us through reading, Muhammad ibn Shu‘ayb informed me, ‘Uthman ibn ‘Ata’ narrated to us, from his father ‘Ata’ ibn Abi Muslim al-Khurasani regarding "And among them is he who says, 'Permit me and do not put me to trial'"—it is said: Permit me and do not cause me to commit sin, and do not cause me to disbelieve.
