Allah ibn Sa‘d al-Dashtaki, Abu Ja‘far al-Razi informed us, from Layth, from Tawus regarding His saying: "Charities are only for the poor, the needy, and those employed to collect them." He said: He is the chief administrator.
His saying, the Almighty: "and those whose hearts are to be reconciled."
[The First Aspect]
Those who interpreted the verse to mean that the reconciliation of hearts (al-mu'allafah qulubuhum) was during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).
10376 - Al-Husayn ibn ‘Arafah ibn Yazid al-‘Abdi narrated to us, al-Mubarak ibn Sa‘id narrated to us, from Sa‘id ibn Masruq, from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Nu‘m al-Bajali, from Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri who said: ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib sent from Yemen to the Prophet (peace be upon him) a small amount of gold with its dust, so he divided it between al-Aqra‘ ibn Habis al-Hanzali, ‘Alqamah ibn ‘Uthathah al-‘Amiri, ‘Uyaynah ibn Badr al-Fazari, and Zayd al-Khayl al-Ta'i. The Quraysh and the Ansar said: "Does he divide between the leaders of the people of Najd and leave us?" So the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "I am only reconciling them."
10377 - Abu Sa‘id al-Ashajj narrated to us, ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad al-Muharibi narrated to us, from Hajjaj ibn Dinar, from Anas ibn Sirin, from ‘Ubaydah al-Salmani who said: ‘Uyaynah ibn Hisn and al-Aqra‘ ibn Habis came to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "O Caliph of the Messenger of Allah, we have a salt-marsh land that has no pasturage and no benefit, if you see fit to grant it to us, perhaps we will plow and sow it, and perhaps Allah will benefit from it." So he granted it to them and wrote a document for them regarding that, and he had it witnessed, and he had ‘Umar witness it, and there was no one among the people [present]. They went to ‘Umar to have him witness what was in it. When what was in the document was read to ‘Umar, he took it from their hands, spat on it, and erased it. They were angry and said bad words to him. ‘Umar said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to reconcile you both, and Islam at that time was small. Allah has honored Islam, so go and strive with all your might; may Allah not take care of you if you take care [i.e., if you are negligent]."
10378 - My father narrated to us, al-Hasan ibn al-Rabi‘ narrated to us, Abu Ishaq al-Fazari narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Jabir, from al-Sha‘bi who said: There is no "reconciliation of hearts" today; they were only men whom the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to reconcile to Islam. When it was the time of Abu Bakr, he cut off the bribe in Islam.
10379 - My father narrated to us, ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Salam al-Jumahi narrated to us, ‘Abd Allah ibn Mu‘adh narrated to us, from Ma‘mar, from Yahya ibn Abi Kathir, that those whose hearts are to be reconciled from Banu Umayyah: Abu Sufyan ibn Harb; from Banu Makhzum: al-Harith ibn Hisham and ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Yarbu‘; from Banu Jumah: Safwan ibn Umayyah...
