truthful, then we are worse than donkeys." Then this was relayed to the Prophet (peace be upon him), and the speaker denied it. Then Allah the Almighty revealed: "They swear by Allah that they did not say [it], but they had said the word of disbelief and disbelieved after their Islam." Thus, what was revealed of this verse was a confirmation of the statement of Zayd.

His saying, the Almighty: "But they had said the word of disbelief."

10401 - (*) My father narrated to us, al-Hasan ibn al-Rabi' narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Idris narrated to us, he said: Ibn Ishaq said:

Al-Zuhri narrated to me from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Ka'b ibn Malik from his father from his grandfather Ka'b, he said: When the Quran was revealed mentioning the hypocrites and what the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, al-Julas said: "By Allah, if this man is truthful, then we are worse than donkeys." He said: 'Umayr ibn Sa'd heard it and said: "By Allah, O Julas, you are the most beloved of people to me, the most excellent of them in my estimation, and the dearest to me that anything he dislikes should befall him. And you have said a statement that, if I mention it, it will expose you, and if I keep silent about it, it will destroy me; and either one of them is worse for me than the other." So he went to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and mentioned to him what al-Julas had said. He swore by Allah that 'Umayr had lied and that I had not said [what he claimed]. So Allah revealed: "They swear by Allah that they did not say [it], but they had said the word of disbelief and disbelieved after their Islam."

[His saying, the Almighty: "And disbelieved after their Islam."]

[The first interpretation]

10402 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Amr Zunayj reported to us, Salamah reported to us, he said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq said, regarding what Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad narrated to us from 'Ikrimah or Sa'id ibn Jubayr from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: Al-Julas ibn Suwayd ibn al-Samit was among those who stayed behind from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) during the expedition of Tabuk, and he said: "If this man is truthful, we are surely worse than donkeys." So 'Umayr ibn Sa'd conveyed it to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). [He said:] "By Allah, 'Umayr has lied against me, and I did not say what 'Umayr ibn Sa'd said." So Allah the Almighty revealed regarding him: "They swear by Allah that they did not say [it], but they had said the word of disbelief and disbelieved after their Islam, and they planned that which they could not attain." And they claimed that he repented and his repentance was sincere, until Islam and goodness were known from him.

The second interpretation:

10403 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid reported to us, Yazid ibn Zuray', narrated to us from Sa'id from Qatadah regarding His saying: "They swear by Allah that they did not say [it], but they had said the word of disbelief" up to His saying: "And they will not have..."
