تفسير ابن أبي حاتم
مجلد 7 · صفحة 148قوله تعالى: ويضل الله الظالمين.

الترجمة · EN

It is said to him: Look at your place had you remained firm. Then a door is opened for him to the Fire, and it is said to him: Look at your place as you deviated. That is the saying of the Exalted: "Allah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word in the worldly life and in the Hereafter" (1).

12267 - From Ibn Abbas, he said: When death approaches the believer, the angels witness him, greet him, and give him glad tidings of Paradise. When he dies, they accompany him to his funeral, and then they pray for him along with the people. When he is buried, he is made to sit in his grave, and it is said to him: Who is your Lord? He says: My Lord is Allah. It is said to him: Who is your Messenger? He says: Muhammad. It is said to him: What is your testimony? He says: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.

That is His saying: "Allah keeps firm those who believe..." (the verse). So his grave is expanded for him as far as his eye can see.

As for the disbeliever, the angels descend and stretch out their hands—and the stretching here refers to striking—striking their faces and their backs at the time of death. When he enters his grave, he is seated and it is said to him: Who is your Lord? He does not return anything to them, and Allah causes him to forget the mention of that. When it is said to him: Who is the Messenger who was sent to you? He is not guided to him, and he does not return anything to them. That is His saying: "And Allah leads the wrongdoers astray" (2).

His saying, the Exalted: "And Allah leads the wrongdoers astray."

12268 - From Qatadah al-Ansari, he said: When the believer dies, he is made to sit in his grave, and it is said to him: Who is your Lord? He says: Allah. It is said to him: Who is your Prophet? He says: Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah. It is said to him that three times. Then a door is opened for him to the Fire, and it is said to him: Look at your place had you deviated. Then a door is opened for him to Paradise, and it is said to him: Look at your place in Paradise since you remained firm.

And when the disbeliever dies, he is made to sit in his grave, and it is said to him: Who is your Lord? Who is your Prophet? He says: I do not know... I used to hear the people saying something. It is said to him: You did not know. Then a door is opened for him to Paradise, and it is said to him: Look at your place had you remained firm. Then a door is opened for him to the Fire, and it is said to him: Look at your place as you deviated. That is His saying: "Allah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word in the worldly life," he said: There is no god but Allah, "and in the Hereafter," he said: The questioning in the grave (3).

12269 - From Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, he said: "I witnessed with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)"
