Husayn who said: Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: Is there no one who will ask me about the Qur'an? By Allah, if I knew today of anyone more knowledgeable about it than me, even if he were beyond the seas, I would go to him. Abdullah ibn al-Kawwa' stood up and said: Who are "Those who exchanged the favor of Allah for disbelief and led their people to the house of perdition"?

He replied: The polytheists of Quraysh. The favor of Allah came to them: faith. But they "exchanged the favor of Allah for disbelief and led their people to the house of perdition" (1).

12274 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-Harith ibn Mansur narrated to us, from Isra'il, from Abu Ishaq, from 'Amr ibn Murrah who said: I heard Ali reciting this verse: "And led their people to the house of perdition," he said: They are the two most wicked ones of Quraysh: the Banu Umayyah and the Banu al-Mughirah. As for the Banu al-Mughirah, they were destroyed on the day of Badr, and as for the Banu Umayyah, they were given enjoyment for a time (2).

12275 - From Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding His saying: "Have you not seen those who exchanged the favor of Allah for disbelief?" He said: They are the two most wicked ones of Quraysh: the Banu Umayyah and the Banu al-Mughirah. As for the Banu al-Mughirah, Allah cut off their last remnant on the day of Badr. And as for the Banu Umayyah, they were given enjoyment for a time (3).

12276 - From Abu al-Tufayl (may Allah be pleased with him), that Ibn al-Kawwa' (may Allah be pleased with him) asked Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): Who are "Those who exchanged the favor of Allah for disbelief"? He said: They are the wicked ones of Quraysh; you were spared them on the day of Badr. He said: Who are "those whose effort is lost in the worldly life"? He said: Among them are the people of Harura' (4).

12277 - From Ibn Abi Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: Is there no one who will ask me about the Qur'an? By Allah, if I knew today of anyone more knowledgeable about it than me, even if he were beyond the seas, I would go to him. Abdullah ibn al-Kawwa' (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: Who are "Those who exchanged the favor of Allah for disbelief"? He said: They are the polytheists of Quraysh. The favor of Allah, which is faith, came to them, so they led their people to the house of perdition.

12278 - From Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding "Have you not seen those who exchanged the favor of Allah for disbelief..." the verse, he said: We used to be told that they are the people of Mecca, Abu Jahl and his companions whom Allah killed on the day of Badr (5).
