His saying, the Almighty: 'And [remember] when We told you, "Indeed, your Lord has encompassed the people"'—the verse.
13323 - From Ya'la ibn Murrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "I was shown the Banu Umayyah upon the pulpits of the earth, and they will eventually rule over you, and you will find them to be evil lords." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was distressed by that, so Allah revealed: "And We did not make the vision which We showed you except as a trial for the people."
13324 - From Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, saw the Banu Umayyah on the pulpits, and that grieved him. Then Allah revealed to him: "It is only a worldly life they have been given," so his eyes were comforted. And this is His saying: "And We did not make the vision which We showed you except as a trial for the people," meaning a test for the people.
His saying, the Almighty: 'And the cursed tree'—the verse.
13325 - From Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, who said: When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, mentioned the tree of Zaqqum as a warning to them, Abu Jahl said: "O assembly of Quraish, do you know what the tree of Zaqqum is that Muhammad warns you about?" They said: "No." He said: "It is Yathrib's 'Ajwah (a type of date) with butter. By Allah, if we get our hands on it, we shall devour it ravenously." So Allah revealed: "Indeed, the tree of Zaqqum is the food of the sinful," and Allah revealed: "And the cursed tree in the Quran"—the verse.
13326 - From Mujahid, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: 'And We warn them,' he said: 'Abu Jahl, concerning the tree of Zaqqum.' 'And it does not increase them'—he said: 'It does not increase Abu Jahl except in great tyranny.'
[His saying, the Almighty: 'And [remember] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate..."'—the verse.]
13327 - From Qatadah, regarding the verse, he said: 'Iblis envied Adam, peace be upon him, for the honor Allah gave him, and he said: "I am of fire and this is of clay." Thus, the beginning of sins was arrogance.'
13328 - From Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, who said: Iblis said: "Adam was created from dust, and from clay, and he was created weak, while I was created from fire, and fire burns everything. I will surely subdue his descendants, except for a few." And his assumption about them proved true.'
