- From Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "a depressed life," he said: He says: Every wealth that I have given to a servant among My servants, whether little or much, and he does not obey Me concerning it, then there is no good in it, and it is the depression in life (1).

- From al-Dahhak regarding His saying: "a depressed life," he said: Straitened (2).

- From Abu Zur'ah, narrated to us by Safwan, narrated to us by al-Walid, narrated to us by 'Abdullah ibn Lahi'ah, from Dawaj, from Abu al-Haytham, from Abu Sa'id, he said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said regarding the saying of Allah the Exalted: "But indeed, for him is a depressed life," he said: It is the squeezing of the grave (3).

- From 'Ikrimah regarding His saying: "a depressed life," he said: The depression of life is when Allah expands upon His servant, yet he makes his living from the forbidden, so Allah makes it a constriction for him in the fire of Hell (4).

- From Malik ibn Dinar regarding His saying: "a depressed life," he said: Allah transforms his provision into the forbidden, so he does not consume anything except the forbidden until he dies, then He punishes him for it (5).

- From al-Dahhak regarding His saying: "a depressed life," he said: Evil deeds and foul provision (6).

- From Ibn Zayd regarding His saying: "a depressed life," he said: It is in the Fire: Shirk (associating partners with Allah), Zaqqum (a bitter tree), Ghislin (the washing of the inhabitants of Hell), and al-Dari' (a thorny plant). There is no life in the grave nor in the worldly life; what is the life and living except in the Hereafter (7)?

- From Mujahid regarding His saying: "But indeed, for him is a depressed life," he said: Azure. "And We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind." He said: Regarding the argument, he says: "My Lord, why have You raised me blind while I was [once] seeing?" He said: In the world. He said: "Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot them; and thus will you, this Day, be forgotten." He said: He will be abandoned in the Fire (8).

- From 'Ikrimah regarding His saying: "And We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind," he said: Everything was blinded from him except Hell. And in another wording he said: He will see nothing but the Fire (9).
