11847 - Through the same chain from Ibn Ishaq: "So when they had despaired of him"—i.e., when they lost hope of him and saw his firmness in his decision.
11848 - ‘Abd Allah ibn Sulayman narrated to us, al-Husayn ibn ‘Ali narrated to us, ‘Amir ibn al-Furat narrated to us, from Asbat, from al-Suddi, who said: Yusuf said to them: "When you go to your father, greet him and tell him: 'The King of Egypt prays for you not to die until you see your son Yusuf,' so that your father may know that there are righteous people on earth like him." So when they had despaired of him, he brought out Sham‘un for them.

11849 - My father narrated to us, Hisham ibn Khalid narrated to us, Shu‘ayb ibn Ishaq narrated to us, Sa‘id ibn Abi ‘Arubah narrated to us, from Qatadah, regarding His saying: "They withdrew privately"—he said: They withdrew by themselves privately.
11850 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Muhammad ibn ‘Isa narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq: "They withdrew privately"—i.e., some of them went off with others.
His saying, the Almighty: "Their eldest said, 'Do you not know?'"

11851 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid (1): His saying: "Their eldest said"—Sham‘un, who remained behind, and the one older than him by birth was Rubil.

11852 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Abu al-Jumahir narrated to us, Sa‘id ibn Bashir informed us, Qatadah narrated to us, regarding His saying: "Their eldest said"—he is Rubil, and he is the one who had forbidden them from killing him, and he was the eldest of the group.
11853 - My father narrated to us, Hisham ibn Khalid narrated to us, Shu‘ayb ibn Ishaq narrated to us, Sa‘id ibn Abi ‘Arubah narrated to us, from Qatadah, regarding His saying: "Their eldest," and he is Rubil, the brother of Yusuf, and he is his maternal brother.
11854 - ‘Abd Allah narrated to us, al-Husayn narrated to us, ‘Amir narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi: "Their eldest said"—and he is Rubil, and he was not the oldest of them in age, but he was their eldest in knowledge.

قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: فَلَمَّا اسْتَيْأَسُوا مِنْهُ.
١١٨٤٧ - وَبِهِ عَنِ ابن إسحاق فلما استيأسوا أَيْ: فَلَمَّا يَئِسُوا مِنْهُ وَرَأَوْا شِدَّتَهُ فِي أَمْرِهِ.
١١٨٤٨ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ثنا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ ثنا عَامِرِ بْنِ الْفُرَاتِ عَنْ أَسْبَاطٍ عَنِ السُّدِّيِّ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ يُوسُفُ: إِذَا أَتَيْتُمْ أَبَاكُمْ فَأَقْرِءُوا عَلَيْهِ السَّلامَ، وَقُولُوا له إن ملك مصر يدعوا لَكَ أَنْ لَا تَمُوتَ حَتَّى تَرَى ابْنَكَ يُوسُفَ حَتَّى يَعْلَمَ أَبُوكُمْ إِنَّ فِي الأَرْضِ صِدِّيقِينَ مِثْلَهُ، فَلَمَّا يَئِسُوا مِنْهُ وَأَخْرَجَ لَهُمْ شَمْعُونَ.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: خَلَصُوا نَجِيًّا.
١١٨٤٩ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا هِشَامُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ ثنا شُعَيْبُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ قَوْلُهُ: خَلَصُوا نَجِيًّا قَالَ خَلَصُوا وَحْدَهُمْ نَجِيًّا.
١١٨٥٠ - حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِيسَى ثنا سَلَمَةُ عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ خَلَصُوا نَجِيًّا أَيْ: خَلا بَعْضُهُمْ بِبَعْضٍ.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: قَالَ كبيرهم ألم تعلموا.

قَالَ كَبِيرُهُمْ وَهُوَ رُوبِيلُ وَهُوَ الَّذِي كَانَ نَهَاهُمْ عَنْ قَتْلِهِ وَكَانَ أَكْبَرُ الْقَوْمِ.
