14255 - My father narrated to us, [saying]: Abu Salih narrated to us, [saying]: Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "footsteps of Satan," he says: His [Satan's] work.
14256 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj narrated to us, [saying]: Abu Khalid narrated to us, from Dawud, from al-Sha'bi, regarding a man who vowed to slaughter his son: He said: Masruq gave him a legal opinion, saying: "It is from the footsteps of Satan," and he gave him a legal opinion to [sacrifice] a ram instead.
14257 - Abu 'Abd Allah al-Tahrani narrated to me, [saying]: Hafs ibn 'Umar narrated to me, [saying]: al-Hakam ibn Aban narrated to us, from 'Ikrimah regarding "footsteps of Satan," he said: The instigations of Satan.
14258 - My father narrated to us, [saying]: Thabit ibn Muhammad al-Zahid narrated to us, [saying]: Husayn al-Ju'fi narrated to us, from al-Qasim ibn al-Walid al-Hamdani, [who] said: I asked Qatadah regarding the saying of Allah the Almighty—I said: What do you say regarding the saying of Allah: "Do not follow the footsteps of Satan"? He said: "Every act of disobedience is from the footsteps of Satan."
14259 - 'Ali ibn al-Hasan al-Hisinjani narrated to us, [saying]: Musaddad narrated to us, [saying]: Khalid ibn 'Abd Allah al-Wasiti narrated to us, [saying]: al-Taymi narrated to us, from Abu Mijlaz regarding the saying of Allah: "Do not follow the footsteps of Satan," he said: [This refers to] vows involving acts of disobedience or [vows] to perform acts of disobedience.
The Second Aspect:
14260 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, [saying]: Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah narrated to us, [saying]: Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me, [saying]: 'Ata' ibn Dinar narrated to me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr: "Do not follow the footsteps of Satan," meaning: the embellishment of Satan in the slander against 'Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her and her father. And regarding His saying: "And whoever follows the footsteps of Satan," meaning: the embellishment of Satan.
14261 - It was narrated from Abu Malik the same as that, and regarding His saying: "For he commands immorality and wrongdoing"; "immorality" meaning sins, and "wrongdoing" meaning: that which is not recognized [as good], similar to what was said against 'Aisha.
The Third Aspect:
14262 - My father narrated to us, [saying]: Abu Salih narrated to us, [saying]: Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "immorality," he says: Adultery; and "wrongdoing," he says: Shirk [polytheism]. It was narrated from al-Hasan and 'Ikrimah the same as that.
