“Job's affliction lasted for eighteen years, and he was shunned by both kin and stranger, except for two of his brothers who were among his closest companions. They would visit him morning and evening. One day, one of them said to the other: ‘Do you know, by Allah, that Job has committed a sin that no one else has ever committed?’ The other asked: ‘And what is that?’ He replied: ‘For eighteen years, Allah has not had mercy on him to remove his affliction.’ When they came to Job, the man could not restrain himself from mentioning this to him. Job replied: ‘I do not know what you are saying, other than that Allah knows I used to pass by two men arguing and mentioning Allah, so I would return to my house and reconcile them, hating that Allah should be mentioned except in truth.’

He would go out to relieve himself, and when he had finished, his wife would hold his hand until he reached home. Once, he was delayed, and she was concerned. Allah revealed to Job in his place: ‘Strike with your foot; this is a [spring] cool and a drink.’ She thought he had taken too long and came to him, only to find him with Allah having removed his affliction, and he was in the best condition he had ever been. When she saw him, she said: ‘May Allah bless you, have you seen the afflicted Prophet of Allah? By Allah, I have never seen a man who resembled him more than you when he was healthy.’ He replied: ‘I am he.’ He had two threshing floors, one for wheat and one for barley. Allah sent two clouds; when one was over the wheat threshing floor, it poured gold into it until it overflowed, and the other poured silver into the barley threshing floor until it overflowed.”

13698 - Yunus ibn Abd al-A'la informed us, Ibn Wahb informed us, Nafi ibn Yazid informed me, from Uqayl, from al-Zuhri, from Anas ibn Malik, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The Prophet of Allah, Job, had his affliction last for eighteen years, and he was shunned by kin and stranger, except for two of his brothers, who were among his closest companions. They would visit him morning and evening. One of them said to his companion: ‘Know, by Allah, that Job has committed a sin the likes of which no one in the worlds has ever committed.’ His companion asked: ‘And what is that?’ He said: ‘For eighteen years, Allah has not had mercy on him to remove his affliction.’ When they went to him, the man could not restrain himself until he mentioned this to him. Job (peace be upon him) said: ‘I do not know what you are saying, other than that Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) knows that I used to pass by two men arguing and mentioning Allah, so I would return to my house and offer expiation for them, hating that Allah should be mentioned except in truth.’ He said: ‘He would go out for his needs, and when he finished, his wife would hold his hand until he reached home. Once, he was delayed, and she was concerned. Allah revealed to Job in his place: ‘Strike with your foot; this is a [spring] cool and a drink.’”
