- Abu Sa‘id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Abu Usamah reported to us, from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Musa ibn Abi ‘Aishah, he said: I asked al-Sha‘bi about His saying: "Let them ask your permission, those whom your right hands possess." He said: "It has not been abrogated." I said: "But people do not act upon it." He replied: "Allah is the One to be sought for help."

- Abu Zur‘ah narrated to us, Musaddad reported to us, Yazid ibn Zuray‘ reported to us, from Yunus, from al-Hasan regarding this verse: "Let them ask your permission, those whom your right hands possess," he said: "If a man has his servant spend the night with him, that is his permission. If he does not have him spend the night with him, he must seek permission during these times that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) mentioned."

- Ahmad ibn Sinan narrated to us, ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi reported to us, from Sufyan, from Abu Husayn, from Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman, he said regarding: "O you who have believed, let them ask your permission, those whom your right hands possess," he said: "It is specifically regarding women; men must seek permission at all times, by night and by day."

- My father narrated to us, ‘Abdah ibn Sulayman reported to us, Ibn al-Mubarak informed us, Sufyan informed us, from Jabir, from Mujahid and ‘Ata’ regarding this verse: "Let them ask your permission, those whom your right hands possess and those who have not [yet] reached puberty among you [three times]." Mujahid said: "It suffices them to seek permission once during these times." ‘Ata’ said: "They must seek permission from them during these times even if they are not in need [of entering]."

- Abu Zur‘ah narrated to us, Yahya ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Bukayr reported to us, ‘Abd Allah ibn Lahi‘ah reported to me, ‘Ata’ ibn Dinar reported to me, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr regarding Allah's saying: "Those whom your right hands possess," he means: the male slaves and the female slaves.

- I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl, Muhammad ibn ‘Ali reported to us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim reported to us, Bukayr ibn Ma‘ruf reported to us, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan, regarding His saying: "O you who have believed, let them ask your permission, those whom your right hands possess," it has reached us—and Allah knows best—that a man from the Ansar and his wife, Asma’ bint Murshidah, prepared food for the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and people began entering without permission. Asma’ said: "O Messenger of Allah, how ugly this is! A servant enters upon a woman and her husband in a single garment without permission." So Allah revealed regarding that: "O you who have believed, let them ask your permission, those whom your right hands possess," regarding male and female slaves.

- ‘Abd Allah ibn Sulayman ibn al-Ash‘ath narrated to us, al-Husayn ibn ‘Ali ibn Mihran reported to us, ‘Amir ibn al-Furat reported to us, Asbat reported to us, from al-Suddi: "O you who have believed, let them ask your permission."
