His saying, the Almighty: "And they supplicate to Us in hope and fear."

13718 - From Ibn Jurayj, regarding His saying: "And they supplicate to Us in hope and fear," he said: "Hope: out of longing and fear; and it is not appropriate for one of these to be separated from the other."

13719 - My father narrated to us: 'Ali ibn Muhammad al-Tanafisi narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Fudayl narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Ishaq ibn 'Abd Allah al-Qurashi narrated to us, from 'Abd Allah ibn Hakim, who said: Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon to us, then said: "To proceed, I advise you to fear Allah, to praise Him as He is worthy, to combine hope with fear, and to be persistent in supplication. For Allah (the Almighty and Majestic) praised Zakariyya (Zachariah) and his household, saying: 'Indeed, they used to hasten to good deeds and supplicate to Us in hope and fear, and they were to Us humbly submissive.'"

His saying, the Almighty: "The one who guarded her chastity."

13720 - From Ibn 'Abbas, he said: Caesar wrote to Mu'awiyah: "Peace be upon you. To proceed... inform me of the most noble of Allah's servants to Him and the most noble of His handmaidens to Him." He wrote back to him: "To proceed... You have written to me asking. I say: As for the most noble of His servants to Him, it is Adam, whom He created with His own Hand and taught the names of all things. As for the most noble of His handmaidens to Him, it is Maryam (Mary) bint 'Imran, the one who guarded her chastity."

His saying, the Almighty: "And We breathed into her of Our spirit."

13721 - From Qatadah, regarding His saying: "And We breathed into her of Our spirit," he said: "He breathed into the opening of her garment."

His saying, the Almighty: "Indeed, this, your religion, is one religion."

13722 - From Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "Indeed, this, your religion, is one religion," he said: "Indeed, this, your faith, is one faith."

13723 - From Qatadah, regarding: "Indeed, this, your religion, is one religion," meaning: "Your religion is one religion, and your Lord is One, though the laws differ."
