and Ali ibn Abi Talib, and Utbah and Shaybah, sons of Rabi'ah, and al-Walid ibn Utbah. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I am the first person to kneel on his knees before Allah for the dispute on the Day of Resurrection."
13817 - From Abu al-Aliyah, he said: When they met on the day of Badr, Utbah ibn Rabi'ah said to them: "Do not kill this man, for if he is truthful, you are the most fortunate of people by his truthfulness, and if he is a liar, you are the most entitled to ensure his blood is spared." Abu Jahl ibn Hisham then said: "You have filled with terror!" Utbah replied: "You shall know which of us is the coward who corrupts his people." He said: So Utbah ibn Rabi'ah, Shaybah ibn Rabi'ah, and al-Walid ibn Utbah stepped forward and called out to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions, saying: "Send out to us our equals to fight us." A group of young men from the Ansar of the Banu al-Khazraj jumped up, but the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "Stay seated... Arise, O Banu Hashim." So Hamzah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, Ali ibn Abi Talib, and Ubaydah ibn al-Harith stood up and stepped forward to face them. Utbah said: "Speak, so we may know you. If you are our equals, we will fight you." Hamzah said: "I am Hamzah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, the lion of Allah and the lion of His Messenger." Utbah said: "An equal and noble!" Ali said: "I am Ali ibn Abi Talib." He said: "An equal and noble!" Ubaydah said: "I am Ubaydah ibn al-Harith." He said: "An equal and noble!" Then Hamzah engaged Shaybah ibn Rabi'ah, Ali ibn Abi Talib engaged Utbah ibn Rabi'ah, and Ubaydah engaged al-Walid. As for Hamzah, he finished off Shaybah; as for Ali, they exchanged two blows, then he stood firm and finished off Utbah; and as for Ubaydah, his leg was struck. He said: These returned, and those were killed. Abu Jahl and his companions shouted: "Al-Uzza is for us, and there is no Uzza for you!" The caller of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) called out: "Our dead are in Paradise, and your dead are in the Fire." Then Allah revealed: "These are two adversaries who have disputed over their Lord."
13818 - From Mujahid regarding His saying: "These are two adversaries who have disputed over their Lord," he said: "This refers to the believer and the disbeliever and their dispute over the Resurrection."
13819 - From Qatadah, he said: The Muslims and the People of the Scripture disputed. The People of the Scripture said: "Our prophet is before your prophet, and our book is before your book, and we are more deserving of Allah than you." The Muslims said: "Our book prevails over all books, and our prophet is the seal of the prophets, so we are more deserving than you." Then Allah favored the people of Islam over those who opposed them and revealed: "These are two adversaries who have disputed over their Lord" until His saying: "the punishment of the Burning Fire."
