"Those who have been evicted from their homes without right," and the verse after it: We were evicted from our homes without right, then we were established in the land, so we established prayer, gave zakat, enjoined what is good, and forbade what is evil. So it is for me and my companions.

13968 - From Thabit ibn Awsajah al-Khudayri, he said: Twenty-seven of the companions of Ali and Abdullah narrated to me, among them Lahiq ibn al-Aqmar, al-Ayzar ibn Jarwal, and Atiyyah al-Qurazi, that Ali said: This verse was only revealed regarding the companions of Muhammad, "And were it not for Allah checking [some] people," he said: Were it not for Allah checking [the world] by the companions of Muhammad, against the followers, the monasteries would have been demolished.

13969 - From Mujahid, regarding the verse, he said: Some of them are protected by others in witnessing and in truth, and in what is similar to this. He says: Were it not for this, these monasteries and what was mentioned with them would have perished.

13970 - From Ibn Abbas, regarding His saying: "Monasteries would have been demolished," he said: The "sawami'" (monasteries) are those in which the monks are; the "bi'a" (churches) are the mosques of the Jews; the "salawat" are the churches of the Christians; and the "masajid" are the mosques of the Muslims.

13971 - From al-Dahhak, he said: "Salawat" are the churches of the Jews; they call the church "salat."

13972 - From Asim al-Jahdari, that he recited: "Wa salawat," he said: The prayers are distinct from the monasteries. He said: How can the prayer be demolished?!

13973 - From Abu al-Aliyah, regarding the verse, he said: Monasteries of the monks, churches of the Christians, and "salawat" are the mosques of the Sabians; they call them "salawat."

13974 - From Qatadah, regarding His saying: "Sawami'" (monasteries), he said: They are for the Sabians, churches for the Christians, "salawat" for the churches of the Jews, and mosques for the Muslims.

13975 - From Ibn Zayd, regarding His saying: "Wa salawat" (and places of prayer), the prayers of the people of Islam are interrupted when the enemy enters upon them; worship is interrupted in the mosques.

13976 - From al-Dahhak, regarding His saying: "In which the name of Allah is much mentioned," he means in all that was mentioned of the monasteries, the places of prayer, and the mosques. He says: In all of this the name of Allah is mentioned, and He did not single out the mosques.
