His saying, the Exalted: "And there were in the city nine men."

- Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding his saying: "Nine men" (tisa'at raht): from the people of Salih.

- Muhammad ibn Sa'd informed us, in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to me, my uncle narrated to me, my father narrated to me, from his father, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding his saying: "And there were in the city nine men," [meaning]: They are the ones who hamstrung the she-camel.

- It was mentioned from Yusuf ibn Harun ibn Hatim, Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Hammad narrated to us, from Asbat, from al-Suddi, from Abu Malik, from Ibn 'Abbas: "And there were in the city nine men who caused corruption in the land and did not reform," he said: Their names were Ri'mi, Ru'aym, Huraym, Dad, Sawab, Ri'ab, Mist'a', and Qaddar ibn Salif, the one who hamstrung the she-camel.

- My father narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Abi Bakr ibn Muqaddam narrated to us, Ja'far ibn Sulayman al-Duba'i narrated to us, who said: I heard Malik ibn Dinar say, and he recited this verse: "And there were in the city nine men who caused corruption in the land and did not reform," he said: How many today are there in every tribe of those who cause corruption in the land and do not reform!

- Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas, the freedman of Banu Hashim, narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq who said: When Salih said that to them, the nine who had hamstrung the she-camel said: Come, let us kill Salih. If he is truthful, we shall finish him before us, and if he is a liar, we would have joined him to his she-camel. So they came to him by night to attack him in his home, but the angels struck them down with stones. When they were delayed from returning to their companions, the latter went to Salih's house and found them crushed, as they had been struck with stones. They said to Salih: You killed them! Then they intended to harm him, but his clan stood in his defense and put on their armor, and they said to them: By Allah, you shall never kill him; he has promised you that the punishment will descend upon you in three days. If he is truthful, you will not increase your Lord in anger, and if he is a liar, then you have behind you what you desire. They departed from them that night, and the men whom the angels crushed with stones were the nine whom Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, mentioned in the Qur'an. Allah says: "And there were in the city nine men who caused corruption in the land and did not reform."
