He said: "Perhaps you write regarding blood that is shed?" He said: "No." He said: "Perhaps you write regarding wealth that is taken?" He said: "No." He said: "Perhaps you write regarding a house that is demolished?" He said: "No. Have you not heard what Moses said? 'My Lord, for that which You have bestowed upon me, I will never be a supporter of the criminals.'" He said: "You have reached me, O Abu 'Amr. By Allah, I will never write for them with a pen ever again." He said: "By Allah, Allah will never leave you without a livelihood ever."

I said: "He does not handle any of the sultan's affairs except that he writes for them with a pen what enters and what exits. If he leaves his pen, a debt becomes due upon him and he is in need; and if he takes it, he has sufficiency in it." He said: "Who is the leader?" He said: "Khalid ibn 'Abd Allah." He said: "The righteous servant, meaning Moses, peace be upon him, said: 'My Lord, for that which You have bestowed upon me, I will never be a supporter of the criminals.' So let him not worry about anything, and let him throw away his pen, for Allah will certainly bring him a livelihood."
