He said: "Do the people think that they will be left [merely] because they say 'There is no god but Allah' until I test them, so I may know the truthful from the liar?"

His saying, the Exalted: "And they will not be tested"

17134 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah reported to us, Warqa' reported to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding His saying: "And they will not be tested," [meaning] they will be tested in their wealth and their souls.

It was narrated from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, Qatadah, al-Rabi‘ ibn Anas, Mu‘awiyah ibn Qurrah, and Khusayf that they said: They will be tested.

17135 - ‘Abd Allah ibn Sulayman narrated to us, al-Husayn ibn ‘Ali reported to us, ‘Amir ibn al-Furat reported to us, Asbat reported to us, he said: So they were tested during the division when ‘Ali, Talhah, and al-Zubayr fought.

17136 - al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah mentioned, Hajjaj reported to us, from Ibn Jurayj, he said: I heard ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Ubayd ibn ‘Umayr saying: It was revealed concerning ‘Ammar ibn Yasir when he was being tortured for the sake of Allah.

17137 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi reported to us in what he wrote to me, Asbagh ibn al-Faraj reported to us, he said: I heard ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam regarding His saying: "Alif-Lam-Mim. Do the people think that they will be left [merely] because they say 'We believe' and they will not be tested?" He said: They will not be examined.

His saying, the Exalted: "And We certainly tested those before them"

17138 - Abu Sa‘id al-Ashaj narrated to us, Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Harithi reported to us, from Juwaybir, from al-Dahhak: "And We certainly tested those before them," he says: We tested those who were before them. It was narrated from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, Mujahid, ‘Ata' al-Khurasani, Mu‘awiyah ibn Murrah, and Khusayf the like of that.

17139 - Abu Zur‘ah narrated to us, Yahya ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Bukayr reported to us, ‘Abd Allah ibn Lahi‘ah narrated to me, ‘Ata' ibn Dinar narrated to me, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr regarding the saying of Allah, the Exalted and Majestic: "And We certainly tested those before them," he says: And We certainly examined them.

His saying, the Exalted: "And Allah will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars"

17140 - Musa ibn Ishaq narrated to us, Abu Kurayb reported to us, Yunus ibn Bukayr reported to us, Abu al-Masrur reported to us, from a man from the Banu Qays ibn Tha‘labah: That ‘Ali used to recite: "And Allah will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars," he said: He will make them known to the people.
