Allah imposed heat upon them for seven days until nothing could shade them from it. Then, Allah brought forth a cloud for them, and one of them went out to it and sought shelter beneath it. He found coolness and relief beneath it, so he informed his people of that, and they all came and sought shelter beneath it, and He ignited fire upon them.

Qatadah said: Shahr ibn Hawshab narrated to us that he saw their location, and that nothing is mentioned of them except a place the size of a needle; they had turned into ashes. Allah (Mighty and Majestic is He) said: "Indeed, it was the punishment of a great day."

15932 - Abu Shaybah Ibrahim ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us, [saying]: al-Hasan ibn Bishr narrated to us, [saying]: Asbat ibn Nasr narrated to us, from Maysarah, from 'Ikrimah regarding His saying: "The punishment of the day of the shadow," [who] said: The shadow had fire in it that descended from the sky. When the earth saw that, it became fearful and thought that it was being targeted, so it convulsed, and it was the 'Afikah (the overturned) for the people of Shu'ayb.

15933 - My father narrated to us, [saying]: 'Isa ibn Abi Fatimah narrated to us, [saying]: Ya'qub ibn 'Abd Allah al-Ash'ari narrated to us, from Ja'far, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding the saying of Allah: "The punishment of the day of the shadow. Indeed, it was the punishment of a great day," [who] said: The shadow was a cloud, and they used to dig tunnels and enter them to cool themselves, but when they entered them, they found them hotter than the surface.

15934 - My father narrated to us, [saying]: Nasr ibn 'Ali al-Jahdami narrated to us, [saying]: Nuh ibn Qays informed us, from al-Walid ibn Hassan, from al-Hasan, [who] said: Allah imposed heat upon the people of Shu'ayb for seven days and their nights, until they could not benefit from the shade of a house nor the coolness of water. Then a cloud was raised for them in the wilderness, and they found relief beneath it, so some of them began calling others. When they gathered beneath it, Allah ignited it with fire upon them. That is the meaning of His saying: "But they denied him, so the punishment of the day of the shadow seized them. Indeed, it was the punishment of a great day."

15935 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, [saying]: Shababah narrated to us, [saying]: Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "The punishment of the day of the shadow," [who] said: The shadows of the punishment [covering] them.

15936 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, [saying]: 'Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us, [saying]: Abu Usamah narrated to us, from Abu 'Aqil al-Naji, [saying]: Abu Nadrah al-'Abdi narrated to us, [who] said: A man from the first generation narrated to us, [who] said: The people of Shu'ayb used to kill [those who lied] over a lie or anything greater than it. When they did that, their livelihood was in hardship. He said: Until one of their kings committed a sin and suspended the penalty. He said: Until they permitted wine in the daytime, openly in the gatherings. He said: So Allah expanded their provision at that, until a speaker said: "If we had known, we would have
