A man gives something to have it compensated for and increased in return, so it does not increase with Allah. The other is one who gives something for the sake of Allah, not desiring from the recipient any reward or compensation; that is what is multiplied with Allah, the Exalted. (1)
17499 - From Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding His saying: "And whatever you give in charity (zakah)," he said: It is the alms (sadaqah). (2)
His saying, the Exalted: "Corruption has appeared on land and sea"
17500 - From Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding His saying: "Corruption has appeared on land and sea because of what the hands of the people have earned, so He may let them taste part of [the consequences of] what they have done, that perhaps they will return [to righteousness]." He said: The decrease of blessing due to the deeds of the servants, so that they may repent. (3)
17501 - From Zayd bin Rufay' (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding His saying: "Corruption has appeared on land and sea," he said: The cessation of rain. It was said: And the sea? He said: If it does not rain, the creatures of the sea are blinded.
17502 - From Ikrimah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he was asked about His saying: "Corruption has appeared on land and sea." He said: As for the land, we know it, but what about the sea? He said: The Arabs call the cities: The sea. (4)
17503 - From Mujahid (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding "Corruption has appeared on land and sea," he said: The corruption of the land: the son of Adam killing his brother. And the sea: the king seizing ships by force. (5)
17504 - From Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding "Corruption has appeared on land and sea," he said: This was before Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was sent; people turned back. (6)
17505 - From al-Suddi (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding His saying: "Corruption has appeared on land and sea," he said: The land: every village that is away from the sea, like Makkah and Madinah. And the sea: every village that is upon the sea, like Kufah, Basrah, and al-Sham. And regarding His saying: "because of what the hands of the people have earned," he said: Because of what they have committed of sins. (7)
17506 - From 'Ata' (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the verse, he said: The sea: the islands. (8)
17507 - From Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding His saying: "that perhaps they will return [to righteousness]," he said: They will repent. (9)
