17607 - From Qatadah regarding His saying: 'And when the eyes grew wild (lit. swerved),' he said: 'The eyes were transfixed.'
His saying, the Exalted: 'And the hearts reached the throats.'
17608 - From Qatadah regarding His saying: 'And the hearts reached the throats,' he said: 'They were displaced from their places; had the throat not been too narrow for them to exit, they would have emerged.' (2)
[His saying, the Exalted: 'And you were making various assumptions about Allah.']
17608 - From al-Hasan regarding His saying: 'And you were making various assumptions about Allah,' he said: 'Various assumptions; the hypocrites assumed that Muhammad and his companions would be wiped out, while the believers were certain that what Allah and His Messenger promised them was the truth, and that He would make it (the religion) prevail over all religions.' (3)
17609 - From Mujahid regarding His saying: 'And you were making various assumptions about Allah,' he said: 'They are the hypocrites; they made various assumptions about Allah.' And regarding His saying: 'There the believers were tested,' he said: 'They were tried/purified.' And regarding His saying: 'And when the hypocrites said,' they spoke of what was in their souls of hypocrisy, and the believers spoke with truth and faith, saying: 'This is what Allah and His Messenger promised us.' (4)
17610 - From Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah, he said: When the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his companions dug the trench, the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the Muslims suffered severe distress. They remained for three days finding no food, until the Prophet (peace be upon him) tied a stone to his stomach out of hunger. (5)
17611 - From al-Suddi, he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) dug the trench, and Quraysh, Kinanah, and Ghatafan gathered. Abu Sufyan hired them with the caravan of Quraysh, so they came and encamped in his vicinity. Quraysh descended to the bottom of the valley, and Ghatafan descended to the right of that, and Tulayhah al-Asadi with Banu Asad to the left of that. The Banu Qurayzah of the Jews supported them in fighting the Prophet (peace be upon him). When they descended upon the Prophet (peace be upon him), he fortified himself in Medina, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) dug the trench. While he was striking in it with his pickaxe, the pickaxe struck a hard rock, and a spark like a shooting star of fire flew from it into the sky. He struck a second time, and something similar came out. Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) saw that and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I saw that from every strike a spark like a shooting star came out and flared up toward the sky.' (6)
