the Messenger of Allah was in her house upon a sleeping mat of his, wearing a Khaybari cloak. Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) came with a pot containing Khazirah (a dish of meat and flour). The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "Call your husband and your two sons, Hasan and Husayn." So she called them. While they were eating, the verse was revealed to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace): "Allah only intends to remove from you the impurity, O people of the household, and to purify you with complete purification." The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) took the excess of his outer garment and covered them with it, then he took his hand out from the cloak and gestured with it toward the sky, then said: "O Allah, these are the people of my household and my closest kin, so remove from them the impurity and purify them with complete purification." He said it three times. Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "I put my head into the covering, and I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, am I with you?' He said: 'You are to a good end,' [saying it] twice" (1).
17680 - From Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding His saying: "Allah only intends to remove from you the impurity, O people of the household, and to purify you with complete purification," he said: "They are the people of a household whom Allah has purified from evil and singled out with His mercy." He said: And al-Dahhak ibn Muzahim (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) used to say: "We are the people of a household whom Allah has purified; [we are] from the tree of Prophethood, the place of the Message, the place where the angels frequent, the house of mercy, and the mine of knowledge" (2).
His saying: "And remember what is recited in your houses of the verses of Allah and the wisdom."
17681 - From Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding His saying: "And remember what is recited in your houses of the verses of Allah and the wisdom," he said: "The Quran and the Sunnah; He admonished them with that" (3).
[His saying: Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women]
17682 - From Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), that she said to the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace): "Why do I hear men mentioned in the Quran while women are not mentioned?" So Allah revealed: "Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women..." (4).
17683 - From Sa'id ibn Jubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding His saying: "Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women," meaning those devoted to Allah among the men, and those devoted [among] the women; "and the believing men and believing women," meaning those who attest to the truth among the men and the women; "and the obedient men and obedient women," meaning the submissive [men] and the submissive [women].
